Day Wireless Systems Expands into Vehicular Telematics with Zonar

Day Wireless Systems, one of the largest and most experienced communication technology providers on the West Coast, has officially joined the Zonar Partner Network. This makes us only the third authorized reseller of Zonar’s newly created channel program – and the timing couldn’t be better.

The global telematics market is projected to be worth more than $233 billion by 2022, according to research from Netscribes. Unsurprisingly, fleet vehicles are expected to drive the lion’s share of these gains, as organizations attempt to use technology to improve the efficiency and safety of their drivers and assets.

As an authorized reseller of Zonar’s telematics products, Day Wireless is now in a strong position to support its customers as they seek to equip their fleets with the latest and greatest technology.

Some Background on Automotive Telematics

Automotive telematics broadly refers to any method used to monitor a vehicle. This includes global positioning satellite (GPS) systems that track location, but also monitor:

  • Speedometers.
  • Distance covered in a given time interval.
  • Rate of acceleration/deceleration.
  • General driving habits.
  • Time spent idling.
  • Gas mileage.
  • Traffic alerts.
  • Vehicle maintenance alerts.
  • Engine diagnostics.
  • Sensors such as tire pressure.
  • Vehicle compliance tracking.

These metrics can greatly improve safety of automotive-based operations by identifying potential risk factors on the road (driving more than 10 miles over the speed limit, drowsy driving, vehicles in need of engine maintenance, stranded vehicles, etc.).

Telematics can also be used to facilitate operational efficiency. Driver habits such as idling for long periods of time and rapidly accelerating can hike up fuel consumption, which ultimately leads to greater operational costs. When it comes to fleet management, no detail is too minute. In fact, UPS has a formal “no left-turn” policy, according to CNN. The company has found that minimizing the number of left turns reduces the risk of traffic collisions, and also cuts back on idling since there’s less waiting for oncoming traffic to pass.

In some cases, telematics are the rule rather than the exception. As of Dec. 2017, all commercial vehicle engines were required to have electronic logging devices (ELDs) that record hours-of-service. Severe penalties will be incurred by commercial fleets that fail to comply with the ELD mandates.

Who Benefits From this New Partnership?

Existing Day Wireless customers who rely on our services and portfolio of communication products are in an especially strong position to benefit from this new partnership with Zonar. Many of our clients that have worked with us for years have come to know, trust, understand and appreciate how we manage projects. These customers now have a local source of telematics expertise and guidance in the form of Day Wireless that can handle everything from consultation, to installation, and customer service & maintenance.

Some of the particular industries and sectors that rely on our communication services and technologies, but can also gain from implementing automotive telematics include but aren’t limited to:

  • School districts: In addition to tracking individual school buses and diagnosing potential equipment failures (e.g., tracking the health of an antilock brake system), Zonar actively tracks rider activity. Each student taps a “Z Pass” RFID card upon exit and entry to a bus, which helps school staff, drivers, and parents keep track of student whereabouts.
  • Public service fleets: Municipal fleets such as public transit, snowplows and other vehicles can use telematics for CSA compliance purposes, but also to improve route optimization and operational efficiency.
  • Utilities: Electricity and gas providers can track their fleets, optimize dispatching and enhance driving efficiency with telematics.
  • Field services: Businesses that dispatch field technicians can track work orders and plan routes based on who is available and where they’re located at any given time.
  • Commercial truckers: Carriers, and 3PLs can automate fleet-vehicle inspections with Zonar, monitor drive behavior, log hours of service, provide recommendations to improve fuel efficiency, track vehicle location in real time and visualize it on a fleet management interface, and so much more.
  • Delivery fleets: Last-mile delivery fleets can benefit from Zonar’s electronic signature capture, automated delivery confirmation and other features that improve rates of on-time deliveries and, ultimately, lead to greater customer satisfaction.

Zonar’s telematics-powered solutions can complement your existing communication and coordination systems by automating the capture and reporting of business-critical automotive data.
